Foxconn, the largest exporter in Greater China, and manufacturer of some of the world’s most renowned products including the iPhone and iPad, plans to release up to 1 million people from its workforce in exchange for robot workers according to a news report from Xinhua News Agency which states Hon Hai chairman and founder, Terry Gou, confirmed the news at an employee dance party.
The new robots will be used to perform “simple and routine” work such as part assembly and welding. Foxconn is currently home to 1.2 million people and 10,000 robots, but that is all set to change in the not so distant future. As early as next year, Foxconn will increase its robot workers to 300,000 and 1 million in three years. No comment has been issued on what will happen to existing employees of Foxconn, so only time will tell.
