Apple Crushes Earnings

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

Earlier this morning we saw a selloff as Wall St remained skeptical that Apple could sustain iPhone activation growth. However, Apple announced earnings today after the close and Apple slammed them out of the park, pushing the stock back into positive territory in after-hours trading.

Apple released earnings of $12.30 per share compared to an estimate of $10.04 and added $39.2 billion in revenue for a pure profit of $11.6 billion! Unit wise, Apple sold 35.1 million iPhones and 11.8 million iPads (expect more iPad sales as the new iPad went on sale only last month). This represents an 88% growth over the same quarter a year ago and a 151% increase unit wise. iPod sales declined 15% to 7.7 million units sold.

CEO Tim Cook summed it up by saying we’ll be seeing a lot more Apple innovation this year so that got us really excited. He stated, “We’re thrilled with sales of over 35 million iPhones and almost 12 million iPads in the March quarter. The new iPad is off to a great start, and across the year you’re going to see a lot more of the kind of innovation that only Apple can deliver.” We hope so Tim, we hope so.

What To Expect From the New iPad

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

Will it be the iPad 3 or the iPad HD? Will there be an iPad mini? These are all questions that will be announced officially tomorrow by Apple in San Francisco at their press conference. Following their usual tight-lipped ways, Apple hasn’t indicated to us one way or another any details regarding the 3rd generation iPad, but their suppliers have done their part and “supplied” us with this information:

  • HD Display – The new iPad will feature a Retina HD Display that packs 4x as many pixels (2,048 x 1,536) in the same 9.7″ frame. How’s that for some juice?
  • 4G LTE – It’s about time Apple picked up the 4G brigade and led us to the glory land of high speeds on our networks
  • Quad-Core processor – Following suit with previous releases, the new iPad will feature a quad-core A6 processor
  • Improved Battery – the battery will need to be improved to power the new screen so expect at least as much battery power from this iPad
  • Better Camera – We’re not exactly sure of the megapixel count yet, but it will definitely be an improved lens
  • iOS 5.1 – Expect Apple to ship the new iPad with 5.1
  • Thicker casing – to power that new screen, Apple had to make the new iPad slightly thicker

While none of this is confirmed yet, all of our questions will be answered tomorrow. The iPads will sell at the same prices as they usually do, with the WiFi only version debuting at $499. Whether or not we will get the iPad mini is still yet to be determined, but don’t be surprised if Apple also unveils a 8GB model of the iPad 2 a la the iPhone route.

We’ll have all the details live from the press conference tomorrow so tune in!

Barnes & Nobles Launch Nook Tablet

Monday, November 7th, 2011

Barnes & Noble held a conference in New York City today to reveal their brand new Nook tablet. So far reviews have been optimistic, with most people taking notice of the better than expected display. The Nook tablet runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread which is known to be slightly choppy so while it isn’t the smoothest UI out there, but that can be improved at a further date.

Price for the new tablet starts at $250 with pre-orders available for next week delivery. An interesting point to mention is that Barnes & Noble has made their goal for the Nook tablet  to compete with the $200 Amazon Fire instead of the iPad, which is usually the measuring stick for all tablets.

Which tablet will you buy this holiday season? Lots to choose from! Look out for a full review once we get our hands on one.

RIM Leaving Tablet Market?

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

We knew that RIM was slowing down the production of their tablet, the Playbook. According to anonymous sources, RIM’s manufacturing partner, Quanta, has supposedly stopped production all together of the Playbook device. What’s more is there is evidence (or rumor?) that RIM has decided to cancel development of all additional tablet projects. While this might seem over the top, consider the numbers: RIM shipped 500,000 units during its launch and then only an additional 200,000 during its first full quarter of availability. If the rumors are true and RIM does kill off its tablet developments, it would mark a very short stint in the tablet world for RIM, as the Playbook was just launched in April of this year.

Time will tell, but we have a feeling that the analysts are right so look out for an official announcement from RIM shortly.

Is RIM Killing Off The Playbook and Their Entire Tablet Line?

Amazon Readies NEW Android Tablet – Kindle Fire

Monday, September 26th, 2011

Amazon is hosting a press conference Wednesday, September 28 at 10AM ET in New York City to reveal their spankin’ new Android powered tablet, the Kindle Fire. The tablet will become available during mid-November and will feature a 7″ screen. Reports state that it looks very similar to the Blackberry Playbook. Before you  get yourself all excited, let’s wait to see what gets released. Reviews have been mixed, with some analysts saying Amazon rushed their product out the door to have a new tablet on the shelf for the holidays.

While we’ll have to wait and see to find out the truth, we do know that the Kindle Fire will be running a custom version of Android and contain Amazon’s media content. It will be powered by a TI-dual core OMAP chip and run between $250 and $300.

We’ll have more as soon as the conference hits Wednesday. Til then, are you burning in anticipation??

Will this be a "hot" seller this holiday season?

Microsoft Unveils Windows 8

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

Today the world received a glimpse of the highly impressive Windows 8 OS platform at the annual BUILD developer conference being held in Anaheim, CA. Microsoft is aiming to bridge the gap between “real work” computing and “leisure activity” computing – two distinct components of computer usage that we are all too familiar with.

I have to say it myself – I LOVE Mac and can’t be without my iPhone, but when it comes to preparing for meetings, creating PowerPoints and modeling in Excel, I NEED a PC. It’s as simple as that. Being in the tech world, I often get approached by friends and family for advice on which platform to go with and given Apple’s flair for innovation and marketing, most people are tempted to try a Mac – I often times have to intervene and ask them what they’re looking to accomplish before I send them back down the PC route..

With the release of Windows 8, Microsoft is looking to put the sex appeal back into Windows. After all, Windows did help shape the modern world we live in today so it’s only fair they get a shot to do so. When Apple introduced the iPad in March of 2010, it declared a “post-PC era”. Let’s be clear: Tablets are not going away and to be honest, neither are PCs.

This distinction is present in the very bloodline of Operating Systems. Take a look at Apple – they have Mac OS for Mac PCs and iOS for intuitive touch face devices such as the iPhone and iPad. Their latest OS rendering, Lion, is the start of tying these two interfaces together. Windows 8 is already at that culmination. We’re excited to see it in action.
